There has been recent activity involving scammers calling relatives of recently arraigned and booked in defendants. The scam involves someone calling the relative, claiming to be from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and asking for money to have their relative released from custody on an ankle monitor. The calls are being received within a few hours of the defendant being processed. The phone calls often come from outside area codes. Scammers send a barcode via text message to use for an electronic money transfer. Scammers often use legitimate ankle monitoring companies’ websites to convince you they’re legitimate.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these incidents. If you have any information, you can call our CID at 315-435-3081
